‘Le Morne Brabant is literally and figuratively the highlight of the trip’ Elles Baks (ZRA at Travel Counsellors) spent her honeymoon in Mauritius and says: ‘The fact that Mauritius has so much more to offer than just sun, sea and sand was a real surprise. A green, hilly interior where you can go mountain biking, hiking and quad biking. Of course, the beaches are also beautiful. In addition, I didn’t expect that you could eat so well in Mauritius; The mix of different cultures is reflected in the delicious local cuisine.’ Which places have you visited in Mauritius?
‘During the first half of the trip, we stayed in the north, near the pleasant town of Grand Baie. From here we made trips to the botanical gardens of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam in Pamplemousses where giant tortoises live, among other things. We also visited the beautiful beaches on the east coast in our rental car and drove past Cap Malheureux on the way. Here you will find a striking Catholic church with a red roof. The second part of the trip we stayed in the south, near Le Morne Brabant. From here we went to Black River Gorges National Park with the Chamarel Waterfall and the Seven Colored Earths. I found the peninsula Le Morne Brabant with the mountain of the same name very impressive and the most beautiful part of the island. The combination of clear blue sea, beach with palm trees and behind it the rocky mountain gives almost a dramatic effect.’ What did you do there? ‘In addition to relaxing on the beach, you can do numerous water sports. Many beachfront hotels offer free activities such as windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling. Of course, we tried a number of things from this. In addition, we made a beautiful boat trip where we saw dolphins and whales up close, very special. The hike to the top of Le Morne Brabant was literally and figuratively the highlight of the trip. It’s a few hours walk to the top, but once at the top you have a beautiful view over the lagoon and the island. We didn’t do it, but you can also take a helicopter ride where you can see the ‘underwater waterfall’, an optical illusion caused by different currents. A good reason to go back again.’ Read more in TravMagazine of week 47, 24 November.
