Dutch holidaymakers travel more often from Düsseldorf Airport than from Schiphol during the May holidays. That’s what the VakantieDiscounter, online provider of package holidays, says on the basis of bookings made. One third (33 percent) of Dutch holidaymakers take the plane from Düsseldorf. Schiphol can count on 30 percent of all bookings. This is 9 percent less than last year during the May holidays. There are differences per holiday destination and period as to which airport is the cheapest, says Laura Vlaanderen of the VakantieDiscounter. ‘For example, we see that the best way to fly to Turkey is from Düsseldorf; you’ll spend an average of 25 percent less than if you fly from the Netherlands.’ Previous figures from the VakantieDiscounter show that Turkey is the most popular destination for an all-inclusive holiday during the May holidays. This also partly explains why Düsseldorf is more popular than Schiphol during this period. Only from Cologne and Frankfurt you can fly cheaper to Turkey during this period. The average price for an eight-day flight to Greece is the cheapest from Eindhoven. If you fly from Germany, you will be 10 percent more expensive on average. Partly because of its wide range of flights and destinations, Schiphol has been the most popular airport for sun holidays for years. Despite the negative reports in recent years, the national airport is still gaining a little ground, says the VakantieDiscounter. In 2023, 51 percent travelled via Amsterdam Airport; For 2024, that share now stands at 52 percent. (Photo Shutterstock).
