Schiphol expects a lot of people at the start of the May holidays, which start on Friday. From 26 April, an average of more than 70,000 passengers a day will depart from Schiphol. This is an increase of almost 10 percent compared to last year’s May holidays, when an average of 64,500 passengers departed from the airport. On peak days, the number of passengers departing is well over 80,000. These peak days are at the beginning of the May holidays. Travellers mainly travel to Spain, Great Britain and Italy during this period. To prepare travellers well for their journey from the airport, Schiphol has launched an information campaign, just like last year. In addition, departing travellers will go through new security scanners with the latest technology during the May holidays. “Travellers should take into account that during a holiday period, such as the May holidays, it is busier at the airport. This can lead to longer waiting times at check-in, security control or passport control,’ says Schiphol. This is one of the reasons why Schiphol advises travellers to prepare well. The airport is doing this by means of an information campaign, among other things. In this campaign, the airport gives tips on what clothes to wear, but also how to pack your luggage smartly. In addition, passengers have the opportunity to use Schiphol.nl and the Schiphol app to find information about their travel day, such as what time the check-in desk opens and where they need to be in the departure hall, as well as the expected and current waiting time at the security check. Schiphol has replaced all 53 security scanners used to check departing passengers with faster scanners. When purchasing the new scanners, safety and comfort for passengers and security guards were paramount, says Schiphol. “An additional advantage is that the scanners are slightly faster. The new scanners analyse in less than three seconds whether travellers are carrying prohibited items. In addition, the new technology means that fewer searches are required, while the high security requirements that apply at Schiphol are still met. (Photo Shutterstock).
