In the fight against nuisance caused by mass tourism, Venice will limit the size of groups of tourists to a maximum of 25 participants.
In addition, the accompanying guides are no longer allowed to walk through the city center with loudspeakers.
The measures were supposed to come into force in June, but have been postponed to August.
Those who do not comply with the rules risk a fine of between 25 and 500 euros.
Previously, the levying of entrance fees was introduced on busy days.
The trial, in which visitors had to pay five euros, was introduced in April for the 29 busiest days of the year.
It was supposed to encourage day-trippers to visit Venice at quiet times.
Many residents have now moved elsewhere, partly to avoid the crowds.
The city council says that in 1954 there were still 170,000 people living in Venice.
That number would have dropped to less than 50,000 last year. (Photo Shutterstock).
