Inbound tourism in Germany had a good summer. Over 62 million overnight stays by foreign visitors were counted through September this year. That is 23 percent more than in the same period last year. With that number, German inbound tourism is only 2.2 percent away from the numbers from the record year of 2019. The Netherlands is as always the most important foreign market for Germany. Also through September, 9.4 million overnight stays by the Dutch were counted. That is 13.2 percent more than the same period last year. The figures apply to accommodations of ten beds or more. Michaela Klare, director of the German Tourist Board in Amsterdam, announced the figures Tuesday during the successful ReisMarkt at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Amsterdam. More than 50 industry visitors attended the event to network with 28 partners from Germany. At the same time, all about the new #stayalittlebitlonger campaign was revealed. The Deutschen Zentrale für Tourismus (DZT, the national tourism agency, ed.) wants to extend the stay per visitor by pointing out the additional opportunities to extend a stay in Germany by one or two nights. This can be done, for example, by extending a city trip with a stay in a neighboring city, such as Cologne and Bonn. The 28 partners from Germany contributed tips to encourage longer stays. The average stay of Dutch tourists in Germany is now 5.7 days. Klare: ‘Germany remains surprising, affordable and close.’ After the Netherlands, Switzerland is the second foreign market (5.2 million overnight stays), followed by the United States (4.9 million overnight stays). The largest group of visitors are Germans themselves, who like to get out and about in their own country. Through the end of September, 319 million overnight stays by Germans themselves were counted. This is an increase of almost 7 percent. Photo: Michaela Klare, director of the German Tourist Board in Amsterdam.
